If you have been walking around at a sports event, and concerts over the years, the chances are you have seen clear bags around every corner, but these bags weren't a form of fashion, they were a clear necessity. Millions of people were suddenly facing new rules about what they could bring inside–clear bags, and tiny clutches. What started as a small safety regulation quickly transformed how we enter stadiums, prepare for games, and experience those once in a lifetime moments.
The concept of clear bags was first introduced after the tragic attacks that took place in Paris the year of 1995. An Islamic terrorist group, going by the name GIA, bombed the Saint Michael Notre Dame metro station, killing 8 people, and injuring over 100. Authorities had determined that this attack only took place due to major lapses in security screenings, because of this security measures were quickly changed to transparent bags only, in all major cities around Europe.
A year later in the 1996 Hermès Spring Summer Fashion Show, the bag named The Kelly Vinyl, came to be. With its unique shine and signature bright orange transparent color, the Kelly Vinyl was the first attempt at making a clear bag not only functional, but a statement piece. This was a change that would spark new beginnings of a whole new era in safety and design.
In the early 2000’s clear bag policies started to take place in the United States given the growing fear of violence and vulnerability. First after the Columbine High School shooting, killing 13 people and injuring over 20 others, then shortly after in 2001, the terrorist attack on September 11th. Two hijacked planes flew into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in New York City, killing a total of 2,996 people.
Both of these tragedies reshaped how Americans viewed public safety and security, forever changing how society balanced freedom with protection, setting the stage for a massive rise in clear bag policies nationwide.
Shortly after in 2013 the NFL introduced the All Clear Policy. This policy limited the size and design of the bag to: 1 bag that is clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and that does not exceed 12" x 6" x 12", a one-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar) or 1 small clear clutch bag or purse, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap – no larger than 4.5” x 6.5.” They allow one clear bag or small clutch purse per person. Their goal with this was crystal clear: to enhance visibility, increase safety, and reduce the long waits for security screening.
University of South Carolina and Clemson followed closely behind the NFl’s policy. Following them came the MLB, WNBA, and some major concert venues including Raymond James Stadium, Gillette Stadium, and even The Bank of America Stadium. Clear bags quickly started to become a permanent part of the modern social experience.
Clear bags were all about compliance. But over time, what started as a safety regulation began to feel like a requirement that left no room for choice. Whether you’re heading to a concert or a game, you’re forced to put your personal items on display for everyone to see. It’s less about convenience and more about exposure, and with that personal style gets lost in the process.
This is where The Clear Republic steps in. Instead of accepting that clear bags had to be an invasion of privacy and unstylish, The Clear Republic reimagined what compliance could look like. The brand bridges the gaps between policy and personal expression, designing beautifully bold “clear” bags that meet stadium bag policy requirements, while offering flexibility, style, and longevity.
With clear bag policies being implemented in many venues, The Clear Republic sees an opportunity to empower women by giving them the choice to comply with security rules and protect their personal privacy, because no one should have to choose between following the rules and feeling comfortable.
Through interchangeable covers and very thoughtful assembly, The Clear Republic gives one clear bag countless lives, proving that safety and self expression can exist together.
