Clear bags have become the standard security measure for stadiums, large scale events, and even some schools across the United States. While clear bags provide more efficient security screenings, they raise concerns about privacy and fashion limitations, especially a lack of discretion and restricted self expression.
The National Football League implemented a clear bag policy back in 2013 that required individuals to only bring clear, plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags inside NFL stadiums. The NFL clear bag policy allows one clear bag per individual no larger than 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches, along with a small clutch or purse that is no larger than 4 and a half inches by 6 and a half inches. Some stadiums such as the Raymond James stadium in Tampa have a no bag policy where no bags of any kind are allowed in the stadium. Clear bag policies then began to spread to universities and other large scale events after seeing how efficient the policy was or had been with the NFL.
An individual from Bayshore Gardens Florida recalled their thoughts on the clear bag policies after attending a Lions game in Orlando.
“I don't feel like I need to broadcast my personal items to the world. That’s completely uncalled for and discriminatory against women or anyone with a handbag.”
Issues quickly arose regarding privacy and clear bags. According to an article by Rutgers University. Parents feel this policy is an invasion of privacy with children being more subjected to bullying since students can see personal belongings in each other's bags. Experts agree that although clear bag policies attempt to solve the issues of school violence, the policies don’t really acknowledge the bigger picture regarding the issues of privacy rights.
Arizona resident Shelby Pape wishes there was a way she could adhere to clear bag policies while protecting her privacy.
“I am someone that often brings medication with me as well as all sorts of personal hygiene products. At times, it can definitely feel invasive to have my personal items on display and I definitely feel I would appreciate an alternative to protect my privacy while also working with safety guidelines.”
Some people aren’t fully aware of clear bag policies and sometimes will have to discard their bag and quickly stuff away their items before getting into the event.
“My experience with clear bag policies has not been very good. I didn't know about the policy and had to throw my bag away and put all of my items in my friend's purses.” New Jersey resident Sara Kmak says when recalling her experience attending a concert in Philadelphia.
Clear bags could also increase the likelihood of theft due to the transparent see-through material of the bag. Since the items are easily seen through the bag, potential thieves have the opportunity to quickly scan any valuables inside the bag they are desperate for and take them when given the chance.
The clear and interior material of the bag can really limit its aesthetic, which can make it less fashionable and appealing.
“They are not super aesthetic considering you can see everything I have so it can look really cluttered in the purse.” Says California resident Sabrina Lewis.
